Building a Backyard Deck in Toronto: Permits, Footings, Materials and Design

A backyard deck is one of the most popular outdoor upgrades in Toronto. It extends indoor living into the yard and elegantly solves the height difference between the back door and the ground. Here is the full process we follow as a Toronto landscaping company.

1. Permits and code

In Toronto a deck usually needs a building permit once it sits more than 0.6m (24") above grade or carries a roof. Setbacks, guard height and stair geometry are all regulated. We prepare drawings and handle the permit so there are no compliance surprises when you sell.

2. Footings must go below the frost line

• Concrete footings need to reach below 1.2m — Toronto's frost depth — or the deck heaves every winter.
• Footing spacing follows beam span, typically 1.5–2.4m.
• The ledger board at the house gets flashing and structural through-bolts. This connection is the most common source of water damage.

3. Choosing materials

• Pressure-treated pine: best value, needs cleaning and oiling every 2–3 years.
• Cedar: beautiful grain, naturally rot-resistant, mid-range cost.
• Composite: higher upfront cost, near-zero maintenance and 20+ year life — ideal if you don't want an annual project.
• Hidden fasteners: no screw heads underfoot, more comfortable barefoot and less water intrusion.

4. Design details

Multiple levels naturally separate the grill zone from the lounge zone. Plan ventilation and storage underneath. Aluminum railings with cable or glass infill keep sightlines open. Leave 5–6mm gaps between boards so leaves and rain clear instead of pooling.

5. Pairing a deck with hardscaping

Our favourite combination: a raised deck off the back door, stepping down to an interlocking patio with a fire pit. Wood stays comfortable underfoot, stone handles heat and heavy wear, and the level change gives the yard depth.

Timeline and upkeep

A standard 20–30 m² deck takes about 5–8 days from layout to finish, including concrete cure time. After that, one spring inspection of fasteners and drainage gaps is enough.
