Garden Landscaping Care in Toronto: A Season-by-Season Routine
2026-08-11
Garden landscaping is where a yard stops looking new and starts looking cared for. This is the seasonal routine we use on Toronto landscaping maintenance properties — you can follow it yourself or have us handle it.
Spring (April–May)
- Clear leaves and flush road-salt damage along walkways; gypsum helps burned edges.
- Core aerate and overseed the lawn — the single most effective fix for thin turf.
- Apply slow-release nitrogen, cut back last year's perennials, refresh mulch to 50mm.
Summer (June–August)
- Mow at 7–8cm. Scalping is the main cause of brown July lawns.
- Water deeply once a week (~25mm) rather than lightly every day.
- Pull dandelion and plantain before they set seed to reduce herbicide use.
Fall (September–October)
- Fall is the best seeding window in Toronto — better germination than spring.
- Apply a high-potassium fall fertilizer for winter hardiness.
- Water evergreens deeply before freeze-up to prevent winter browning.
Winter (November–March)
Protect new shrubs from snow load, and de-ice with sand or calcium chloride rather than rock salt, which damages both turf and paver joints.
Beds that stay tidy with less work
Deep bed edges cut at a spade's angle, generous mulch, plants grouped by water need, and drip irrigation on a timer. Those four things cut weekly garden work roughly in half.
