Toronto Driveway Pavers: Base, Thickness, Drainage and Salt Care
2026/8/11
Toronto driveway pavers deliver one of the best returns of any Toronto backyard renovation or front-yard project: better curb appeal, fixed drainage, and a surface that handles freeze-thaw and de-icing salt far better than poured asphalt.
Why a driveway is not built like a patio
- Excavation: 300–400mm, all organic soil out, geotextile over soft sub-grade.
- Base: 3/4" crushed stone in lifts of 100mm or less, compacted each lift.
- Paver thickness: 60mm minimum, 80mm for heavy vehicles or slopes.
- Pattern: herringbone interlocks best; running bond shifts under tire shear.
- Edge restraint: concrete or heavy-duty edging with long spikes — the perimeter spreads within two winters without it.
Drainage and slope
Roughly 2% fall away from the house. If the garage apron is the low point, a linear drain tied into the storm system is required, and downspouts should discharge at least 1.5m beyond the paving.
Choosing the pavers
Holland and Roman formats are durable and economical; large-format slabs read modern. A contrasting soldier course border noticeably lifts the finished look. Darker units hide oil marks; lighter units widen the space but need washing.
Salt and sealing
Pavers themselves resist salt, but joint sand migrates over years of freeze-thaw. Seal about 60 days after installation, reseal every 3–4 years, top up polymeric sand each spring, and de-ice with sand or calcium chloride.
Timeline and cost drivers
A typical two-car driveway of 40–60 m² takes 3–5 days including removal, excavation, base, laying and cleanup. Cost is driven by disposal volume, paver grade, and whether steps or a retaining wall are involved.
Red flags in a driveway quote
- Stone dust instead of crushed stone base.
- No stated excavation depth or base thickness.
- No edge restraint line item.
- Single compaction pass — invisible at handover, wavy by year two.
